Europe’s Largest Green Facade – With its lush exterior, the building complex makes a significant contribution to climate neutrality and an ecologically responsible future.
The complex’s facade was covered with hornbeam hedges, arranged in a pyramid formation. The hornbeams extend over a length of approximately eight kilometres.
The positive ecological effect is equivalent to about 80 mature deciduous trees. The green spaces provide habitat for a variety of urban wildlife, thereby promoting biodiversity.

The green facade prevents Kö-Bogen II facade from heating up excessively to 70 degrees Celsius—under intense sunlight and releasing that heat back into the surrounding air. The hedge functions as a heat buffer for the urban climate, meaning that the temperature around the commercial building will not rise as dramatically due to the greening concept.
The hornbeam hedge is supplied with water and nutrients year-round as needed via an irrigation system. In return, the hedge releases moisture into the air through its leaves.
In addition to capturing fine dust on their leaf surfaces, the plants absorb CO2 and produce oxygen. The ecological benefit is equivalent to that of roughly 80 mature deciduous trees, such as those in the neighbouring Hofgarten.
